01 / LOOKING AHEAD
The week, in perspective.
Up to 14 NWS day/night periods represent roughly seven days, not fourteen days. Later periods are less useful for precise timing. ZIP forecasts use an approximate area center; observations come from the named nearby station. Conditions can vary within the area.

How close did the forecast get?
NWS local guidance
Official local Weather Forecast Office guidance is the primary forecast. Julie reports its values; she does not invent weather or fit a curve through yesterday’s temperatures.
Saving forecasts now. Local verification needs future observations.
24-hour GFS forecast audit
Archived predictions are matched to actual nearby station observations. This tests GFS temperature forecasts, not the NWS outlook above.
Method, limitations, and source receipts
Forecast method: NWS local operational guidance. No claim is made that it is the statistically best model for every location. The independent audit uses Open-Meteo’s archived GFS seamless 24-hour lead and NWS station observations matched within ±30 minutes. Each observation is used at most once. MAE, RMSE and signed bias describe temperature error only.
The persistence comparison uses the observed temperature 24 hours earlier. Both methods are scored on the same subset when that earlier observation exists. Adjacent hourly errors are correlated; one week of one station is not a statewide skill assessment. No percentage “accuracy” or unsupported confidence score is generated.
NWS local scores use forecasts that this app actually saved before the target time, with 12–36 hours of retrieval lead and the record nearest 24 hours chosen per valid time. They accumulate while the app is running. Station observations and forecast grid cells may differ in position and elevation.
